CEN FASHION: 6 Reasons Why We Love Scrunchies

 By Cindy Menassa

The French call them “Chouchou”, but they’re most commonly known as “scrunchies”, or better yet, “Hair Clouds”, also known as the 80’s/90’s favorite hair accessories.

These oldies-inspired hair-ties are just a tip of the “bring back the eighties” iceberg. Indeed, for the past few seasons, we’ve noticed a lot of shoulder pads, bouffant sleeves and ruffled pieces, reminiscent of the late 20th century.

Although the eighties weren’t the most lovable years in terms of fashion, designers have brought back the most dominant trends of that time. Let’s take a look at Saint Laurent for instance, whose latest collection was inspired by the eighties’ figures and shapes. It was during his Spring-Summer 2018 collection that Anthony Vaccarello successfully staged a comeback full of epaulettes, feathers, frills and one-shouldered dresses.

But what we’ve come to notice is that scrunchies are not only back, but they’re back in full force – think crushed velvet, opulent colors, floral patterns and different textures. And here’s why we’re totally head over heels for them!

They’re your ultimate savior should you have a bad hair day – and God knows we’ve been having them a lot. If by any chance your hair is not cooperating with you, all you have to do is tie it up in a ponytail with a big and bold scrunchie and you are golden!
They can hold more hair and are hence much stronger than your average hair ties. In other words, you wouldn’t have to worry about having your scrunchie exploding into a million pieces – along with your hair. They get the job done.
You can play with the color of your scrunchie so it could match your look. Who said hair accessories weren’t fun?
If you don’t feel like tying up your hair straight away, you can always use your scrunchie as a bracelet! Arm candy much?
They break monotony and they’re a certified way to spruce up your outfit. Our tip? Wear a metallic scrunchie with an all-black look for added effect.
Finally, they don’t damage your hair. So if you change your mind at the last minute, you won’t end up looking like Chewbacca.

Breaking the glass ceiling.

In life we fail, sometimes once, sometimes twice, sometimes thrice and sometimes every time. So we decide to quit, because we did our best but it was not good enough. Sometimes too we succeed and then out of nowhere we make a little mistake and it makes us feel like we have failed totally.

Oftentimes people look at our size, our height, our color, our country, our past and tell us we cannot achieve anything great.

Sometimes we believe them, other times we think they are right. So we quit and give up and we hide ourselves from the world and from the people who look up to us.

We hide our dreams, we hide our passion, we hide our talent, we hide our skill, we hide our ideas. We coil and retire to being quiet and to stay out of trouble.

But everyday we look at ourselves in the mirror and we hear the still small voice telling us, never give up and don't quit but we ignore it.

We begin to resort to all avenues and mediums to help us feel okay.
Sometimes we begin to calm ourselves with alcohol, substance abuse, drugs, sex and many more because we know we are hurting deep inside and we just don't believe there is anything good still left in us. But today I want to change your mindset of failure and giving up.

When we fail it means
F - First
A - Attempt
I - In
L- Life

And like everyone when we were learning to walk as children we fell many times but we kept trying until we could walk.
After we could walk now we can run, but before we had to fall to learn not to fall.
So in life, we fail to learn how not to fail. We don't quit to learn how to succeed.

Steve Jobs was fired from Apple a company he helped build because he failed at some point. But He went away to learn not to fall anymore because he who has fallen fears no fall.
When he came back to Apple, those who had not failed could not match him anymore because he has learnt from his mistake.
Today I want to tell you too not to quit or give up because you have failed in the past.
I love you and I want you to promise me that you too won't give up. "Because when you Keep trying, you will come out flying."

Please, spare a little time today and  meditate on these uplifting scriptures.

Be blessed.

What would my life look like if my distinguished character were Christ?

What does "My Identity is in Christ" mean? What exactly is an "identity"? Webster's Dictionary says that an identity is "the distinguished character or personality of an individual; the relation established by psychological identification."

Clearly, things we identify with can have deep psychological roots and can stem from past experiences, fears, pleasures, and inborn personality traits.

God tells us right from the beginning of  His Word to us in Genesis that we were made in His image and as such He wants us to rely on Him and find our identity in Him.

The Psalmist David describes our reliance on God this way. "For You are my Rock and Fortress; for Your name's sake You will lead me and guide me . . .for You are my strength." ( Psalms 31: 3-4)

What would my life look like if my distinguished character were Christ? What if my personality were that of Christ? What if on the deepest psychological level others saw Christ in me and not the dysfunctional behavior I carry around? What would that look like?

When under pressure, what character traits do others see in you?
